EXPORT, PENNSYLVANIA - Researchers at AMI DODUCO, a Technitrol Company (NYSE: TNL), will present test results for electrical contact materials in new automotive applications at the 48th Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) Holm Conference on Electrical Contacts, the world’s leading engineering forum on electrical contacts and related subjects. The Holm Conference is being held October 21-23, 2002 in Orlando, Florida.
The higher power current of the new 42-volt automotive electrical standard could cause electrical contacts in switches, relays, and motor controllers to have a shorter effective life due to arc erosion. Such erosion occurs when the arc that arises between two contact surfaces causes a slight welding and subsequently a transfer of material from one surface to another when circuit is once again opened.
Researchers Chi Leung, Ph.D. and Eric Streicher of AMI DODUCO tested a combination of common contact materials under various direct current (DC) loads to determine the degree of material transfer and arc erosion. They concluded that paired silver tin oxide contacts offered the optimal resistance to material transfer
under the load conditions tested. This understanding will help designers extend the service life of automotive high power switches, relays, and motor controllers.
“Automotive electrical and electronic system technology is changing rapidly,” said Albert Thorp, III, Chief Executive Officer of AMI DODUCO. “We believe that this creates a window of opportunity for AMI DODUCO to grow in this market. We are taking advantage of this opportunity by working with automotive component designers at the earliest stages of product development. Our basic research enables solutions that raise the bar for product performance and reliability, making AMI DODUCO a preferred development partner for automotive systems of the future.”
Headquartered in Export, Pennsylvania, AMI DODUCO is a global leader in electrical contact technology and fabrication.
