PFORZHEIM, Germany – AMI DODUCO, a Technitrol (NYSE: TNL) Company, announced the availability of a physical vapor deposition (PVD) metal coating process for a wide range of substrates, including plastic. Applications include radiofrequency (RF) shielding for electronic device enclosures, illuminated tubing to facilitate dental suction procedures or to reduce the risk of infection in urological catheters, and the printing of circuitry on electronic circuit boards.

On the surface of plastics, ceramics, glass and other metals, the PVD process forms a metallic layer with good adhesion, which then can be electroplated with copper, tin or other non-precious or precious metals and used for soldering, bonding or as a contact base. In one new application, developed for dental equipment manufacturer KaVo Dental, light-emitting diode assemblies are attached to PVD-metallized suction tubing. The illuminated tubing facilitates examination and suctioning of the oral cavity.
